CREATION OF ENTERPRISE DESKTOP GIS TOOLS
Build GIS desktop products for use by entire organization, i.e. “Dashboard
Portal”
C H A L L E N G E
Getting spatial information into the hands of agency decision makers is an
important objective of most successful GIS efforts. The challenge was
to create a low-cost and painless to implement GIS desktop tool or “GIS
Portal” for the entire organization. The Portal needed to easy to use
by all levels of staff, but have enough functionality and data integration
to be useful.
 S O L U T I O N
For software costs of less than $5,000 and a minimal amount of setup time, a
“GIS Portal” was created. The Portal was setup to utilize the latest map
layers and information available. Important tools included in the Portal
were simple printing and exporting capability, identifying map features, and
checking on/off map layers. This particular solution was not web-based and
the time it took to implement the solution was approximately 2 months.
R E S U L T
The agency now has a dependable single source of accurate map based
information. The “GIS Portal” is used by 15 – 20 staff members on a daily
basis. Answers to simple questions such as “What is the zoning on a
particular parcel?” or “Which Council District is a CIP project located?”
are a few clicks away.
