GIS STRATEGIC PLANNING AND STARTUP
Design and implement a Geographic Information System

C H A L L E N G E
Most medium to large local jurisdictions across the nation have leveraged GIS technology to support a variety of business functions. Some smaller or new jurisdictions are just beginning to think about how to implement a GIS. The challenge was to produce a properly sized GIS Strategic Plan that would be instrumental in implementing a startup GIS to satisfy the unique requirements of the client jurisdiction.

S O L U T I O N
Through a series of meeting with the working units throughout the organization and in-depth data research a GIS Strategic Plan was formed. Many questions were asked to achieve a thorough understanding of how GIS could improve business processes.

R E S U L T
The journey itself in creating a GIS Strategic Plan is just as important as the final draft. The building of relationships and an understanding of the benefits of GIS were formed throughout the process. The final result was a successful startup of the GIS including data collection, maintenance, and analysis, map creation, and agency-wide GIS tools benefiting the entire organization.
